Military Academy
The Military Academy is a public military university and higher education institution responsible for training officers for the Portuguese Army and the Republican National Guard (GNR). It also offers additional academic programs open to civilian students.
The Academy’s headquarters are located in Lisbon, at the Palace of Bemposta (also known as Paço da Rainha or Quartel de Gomes Freire). In addition to its main campus, the Academy also maintains a facility in the city of Amadora.
Mission
The mission of the Military Academy (AM) is to train officers for the permanent cadres of the Army and the Republican National Guard, equipping them with the skills required to perform their statutory duties. The Academy prepares its graduates to fulfill the missions of the Army and GNR, while promoting their personal development for roles involving command, leadership, and management.
Vision
To establish the Military Academy as a premier institution for the training of commanders and as a military university of national and international reference—recognized for the excellence and specificity of its teaching, research, and service to the community, particularly in areas of strategic importance for security and defense. This vision is grounded in a strong culture of values and reinforced by the Academy’s contribution to the Army, the Republican National Guard, and society.
Values
Within the scope of scientific, military, and behavioral training, the Academy develops a wide range of activities that help students identify, understand, and embrace the institutional values upheld by the Army and GNR. Through this process, the Academy instills, cultivates, and consolidates the timeless principles essential to the military vocation. These values include:

PATRIOTISM: A sense of devotion, pride, dedication, love, and service to the homeland - even at the cost of one’s life - aligned with the Academy’s motto: “It is sweet and honorable to die for the Fatherland.”
